Heavily featured in the January 2021 issue under the title ‘Best of the Best’ in Classic Ford magazine, we learn about the work that was carried out by Ford enthusiast Wayne Champion. Having worked on a few cars prior to this, Wayne knew a thing or two about preparing a car to a high level.
He explains - Stripped and taken back to a bare metal shell, the entire bodywork was sanded and prepared for its repaint. It was then taken to Jay's Auto Body Works in Staploe Bedfordshire for the full professional respray where it was finished in the excellent choice of Signal Green. It looks amazing.
Featuring the Essex 2994cc overhead-valve V6 mated to a refurbished Type 5 four-speed manual gearbox. The engine was refurbished, and many parts were replaced where necessary. The running gear was also stripped to bare metal, treated and painted in a fresh coat of gloss black.
In creating the unique look of this Cortina, Wayne sourced some sportier seats from the Capri and had them re-trimmed by A&R Pound in Baldock Hertfordshire in the eye-popping green Carla check. An RS Four spoke steering wheel and RS2000 steel wheels are a welcome choice on this fine looking car Finally - Wayne improved the ride by fitting 25 mm springs, with spacers and GAZ dampers all around, thus making the car sit a little lower at the front - further adding to its subtle modified look.

This car in its essence is nearly a 50-year-old car and if only it drove as the previous owner had wanted it to, it would be a £200,000 record breaking car. But it doesn’t drive like a brand new 3.0 Porsche - it drives like a 3.0 S Cortina that has survived 50 years, probably been rebuilt more than once, and because of this evokes memories of our childhood in the 70’s and going with Mum and Dad to Blakeney, Norfolk for the summer - we love it and it’s a serious ‘find another’ candidate.
