These models in this condition are extremely few and far between, as most have been highly modified and raced and usually retained by their owners. In Japan, owners believe that cars didn’t improve from this generation. They are revered by those that enjoy motorsport, particularly in Asia, where drifting is a huge past time and a social event. The set up and balance of this car is described as ‘perfection’, and the rear wheel drive delivers a guaranteed fun driving experience, supported by huge turbo power. The 180SX has huge tuning potential, making it the first choice for competitive events and also for those who enjoy the status this model delivers, and others who want the fastest and best in town. It is a genuine ‘cult’ car. It is also the nearest family member to the infamous Nissan Skyline’s that command huge premiums, but deliver no more fun.
Whilst usually modified and personalised, this example has not been and still has the original SR20DET engine with low mileage, appearing not to have been modified with only a few common minor exceptions. These include aftermarket coil over suspension, exhaust system, air filter, and exclusive expensive Rays 17” wheels. Make no mistake, this is the rare Type R that had factory upgrades including suspension, brakes and a 200bhp power output - some 10% increase over the standard 180. It also has the original factory sunroof, the wonderful Type R spoiler and an aggressive body kit. Weight was also reduced; sports seats and a LSD also apply to the Type R model.
The interior is near perfect, with the factory velour sports trim and seat decals still in top order. We addressed some minor fading to the paintwork in a few areas, which were carried out in our own paint shop, therefore the bodywork presents without faults. The service history and all manufacturers books from new accompany the car, and we can say that this has clearly been a well maintained vehicle. The grade from Japan was 4/b – very impressive.
